\u2014\u00a0Nuclear energy currently meets 18-20% of\u00a0Romania\u2019s energy needs through two CANDU reactors at\u00a0Cernavoda. Plans are underway to\u00a0double this capacity in\u00a0the next decade, with new reactors expected to\u00a0be\u00a0operational by\u00a02030-2031. Romania also plans to\u00a0refurbish an\u00a0existing unit by\u00a02037, all in\u00a0line with its decarbonization goals.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0addition, Romania is\u00a0working towards maintaining an\u00a0integrated nuclear fuel cycle, supported by\u00a0a\u00a0strong partnership with Kazakhstan, particularly with Kazatomprom, which has been pivotal in\u00a0securing fuel supply.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0Can you elaborate on\u00a0the Romania-Kazakhstan collaboration in\u00a0the nuclear energy sector?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0Kazakhstan has played a\u00a0key role in\u00a0supporting Romania\u2019s nuclear fuel cycle, especially through the Trans-Caspian route, which has been both logistically challenging and beneficial. This partnership, alongside support from KazMunayGas, demonstrates the interconnectedness of\u00a0power and industry between the two nations.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0What are the key innovations and projects you are focusing on\u00a0to\u00a0advance nuclear technology?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0We\u00a0are developing several major projects, including the refurbishment of\u00a0Unit 1 and the construction of\u00a0Units 3 and 4 at\u00a0Cernavoda, which will double our capacity. Additionally, we\u00a0are working on\u00a0small modular reactors (SMRs) to\u00a0replace decommissioned coal plants, with the first SMR project under development in\u00a0Doice\u0219ti using NuScale\u2019s Voyager 6 technology.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0How does your company ensure high environmental and safety standards?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0We\u00a0are currently undergoing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reviews and developing new codes and standards to\u00a0align with ESG goals. Our operations focus on\u00a0benefiting the community while ensuring safety, health, and environmental protection through rigorous waste management policies.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0Public perception of\u00a0nuclear energy is\u00a0often a\u00a0concern. How do\u00a0you address these concerns, particularly in\u00a0the context of\u00a0Kazakhstan\u2019s upcoming nuclear referendum?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0We\u00a0maintain a\u00a0transparent and open approach to\u00a0our nuclear programs, engaging with local communities and universities to\u00a0educate the public. Good communication and demonstrating the economic benefits of\u00a0nuclear energy are key to\u00a0improving public understanding and acceptance.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0Some Kazakh citizens worry about nuclear safety. How would you respond to\u00a0their concerns?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0Nuclear energy is\u00a0one of\u00a0the safest forms of\u00a0energy production. Having worked in\u00a0various energy sectors, I\u00a0can confidently say that no\u00a0other industry has the same level of\u00a0oversight and collaboration as\u00a0nuclear energy. If\u00a0other industries operated with similar rigour, the world would be\u00a0much safer.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0What role do\u00a0you see Romania playing in\u00a0the global nuclear energy landscape?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0At\u00a0the UN\u00a0Climate Change Conference 2023, we\u00a0committed to\u00a0tripling nuclear energy production by\u00a02050. Nuclear energy will play a\u00a0key role in\u00a0balancing the grid as\u00a0power needs grow due to\u00a0technological advancements. Romania, with one of\u00a0the top-performing nuclear plants in\u00a0the world, is\u00a0well-positioned to\u00a0share expertise and help train future leaders in\u00a0nuclear energy.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0How many nuclear power stations are currently operating in\u00a0Romania?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0We\u00a0currently have one power station with two units. We\u00a0plan to\u00a0expand with two more units at\u00a0the same site, and an\u00a0SMR at\u00a0a\u00a0separate location, increasing our total reactors from two to\u00a0five.<\/p>\n
